When I came home last night, there were two Yellow Pages phone books at my door. Like all the others, they ended up in the trash bin.

Who is using phone books nowadays? Not many for sure.
Yet, businesses are paying several millions of dollars to display their ads. Money is being wasted; trees are being wasted.

<p>If <strong>At&amp;t</strong>, <strong>Verizon</strong>, and <strong>YellowBook </strong>were to conduct ethical business, they could send a postcard instead of the phone books. The postcard would ask for the permission to send out the phones books. Suddenly, we are collectively saving trees.</p>
<p>Then, <strong>At&amp;t</strong>, <strong>Verizon </strong>and <strong>YellowBook </strong>sales representatives would present to business owners the real number of persons willing to receive the phone books. Suddenly, money is not being wasted and the lies stop.</p>
<p>The ethical move is unlikely to happen&#8230; Well, the Yellow Pages phone books might just simply disappear.</p>

<p>Posting comments is becoming more and more popular. You can do it on blogs, on photo sharing sites, on video sharing sites, and even on &#8220;non-social media&#8221; platforms. When you do it right, leaving your comments will help to:</p>
<ul>
<li>drive free traffic to your website</li>
<li>make you more noticeable</li>
</ul>
<p>It&#8217;s not rocket science. Here&#8217;s how you can do it:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Set up a free account with <a title="What is Gravatar?" href="http://en.gravatar.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/en.gravatar.com');" target="_blank">Gravatar</a></strong> (<strong>G</strong>lobally <strong>R</strong>ecognized <strong>Avatar</strong>). <a title="What is Gravatar?" href="http://en.gravatar.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/en.gravatar.com');" target="_blank">Gravatar</a> allows associating any of your emails with your picture. When you leave your comment with your registered email on <a title="What is Gravatar?" href="http://en.gravatar.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/en.gravatar.com');" target="_blank">Gravatar</a> supported platforms, your picture will automatically be displayed. The more you put your face out there, the better is your personal branding.</li>
<li><strong>Find good blogs to leave your comments</strong>. For me, good places are:
<ul>
<li>blogs from experts. You can be noticed and build your reputation. However, you would need to bring your A game.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>do follow blogs. Do follow blogs are blogs where the link to your website will count in Google&#8217;s eyes. Here is a search on &#8220;<a title="Do Follow List" href="http://www.google.com/search?q=do+follow+blog+list" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">do follow list</a>&#8221; on Google.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>Chose a name</strong>. Sometimes, it will be appropriate to put your full name; sometimes it will be appropriate to put a keyword phrase relating to your website. I prefer to put my full name because the keyword phrase makes your comment look like a spam.</li>
<li><strong>Add the url of your website</strong>. You can either point to the homepage or even better to a page developing similar or complementary idea.</li>
<li><strong>Leave meaningful comments</strong>. It seems obvious but it&#8217;s not easy to do. Post comments that will be useful and interesting. If you are an expert in your field or would like to be recognized as an expert, it&#8217;s your chance to show what you got. Be smart and don&#8217;t post comments that look and smell like spam.</li>
<li> <strong>Repeat</strong>. The more you comments the more traffic you will drive and the more noticeable you will be.</li>
</ol>
<p>What about you start practicing by commenting on this post? What do you have to say?</p>

<p><span>There are many ways to find information. I want to share three very powerful tools that give results in real time and best of all completely FREE.</span></p>
<h3><span>Google Trends &amp; Google Insight for Search<br />
</span></h3>
<p><span><a title="Google Trends" href="http://www.google.com/trends" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Trends</a> displays on a graph over time the number of searches for one, two or more keywords. When you know the trend of searches on a particular term, you can have a clearer picture. Here is an example:</span></p>
<p><strong><span>PPC vs. SEO vs. SMO</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-329" title="ppc seo smo Google Trends" src="http://www.chomchomadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/ppc_seo_smo.jpg" alt="ppc seo smo Google Trends" width="500" height="249" />If you were in internet marketing, you might want to focus on providing search engine optimization (SEO) services instead of pay-per-click (PPC). Also, social media optimization (SMO) might represent a good business opportunity since this tactic appears to be relatively new to the public.</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><a title="Google Insight for Search" href="http://www.google.com/insights/search/#" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Insight for Search</a> is the advanced version of </span><a title="Google Trends" href="http://www.google.com/trends" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Trends</a>. You can compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, and time frames. <span>Here is an example:</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><span>Myspace vs. Facebook</span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-334" title="myspace facebook Google Insight for Search" src="http://www.chomchomadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/myspace_facebook.jpg" alt="myspace facebook Google Insight for Search" width="500" height="481" />Where would your company rather be <a title="Myspace" href="http://www.Myspace.com" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.Myspace.com');" target="_blank">Myspace</a> or <a title="Facebook" href="http://www.facebook.com" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.facebook.com');" target="_blank">Facebook?</a></span></p>
<h3 style="text-align: left;"><span>Twitter Search</span></h3>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><a title="Twitter" href="http://www.twitter.com" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.twitter.com');" target="_blank">Twitter </a>is obviously the hottest spot for social media in 2009. <a title="Twitter Search" href="http://search.twitter.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/search.twitter.com');" target="_blank">Twitter Search</a> is a tool that allows you to see what people have been saying (or twittering) about a certain term. The term can be anything relevant to your research: your brand name, your competitor&#8217;s brand name, a trendy product, etc.<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><a title="Twitter Search" href="http://search.twitter.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/search.twitter.com');" target="_blank"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-336" title="twitter search" src="http://www.chomchomadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/twitter-search.jpg" alt="twitter search" width="500" height="303" /></a><a title="Twitter Search" href="http://search.twitter.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/search.twitter.com');" target="_blank">Twitter Search</a> is not only a research tool, but also a communication tool. Once the results are displayed, you can pro-actively participate in a conversation.</span></p>
<h3 style="text-align: left;"><span><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-337" title="twitter search results" src="http://www.chomchomadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/twitter-search_results.jpg" alt="twitter search results" width="500" height="242" /></span></h3>
<h3 style="text-align: left;"><span>Google Alerts</span></h3>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span><a title="Google Alerts" href="http://www.google.com/alerts" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Alerts</a> are updates directly to your email </span><span>of the latest relevant Google results (web, news, blogs, etc.) based on your choice of query or topic. The best usages for marketing purpose are:</span></p>
<ul>
<li><span>industry updates</span></li>
<li><span>competitor news</span></li>
<li><span>brand monitoring</span></li>
</ul>
<p><span><a title="Google Alerts" href="http://www.google.com/alerts" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-338" title="google-alerts" src="http://www.chomchomadvertising.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/google-alerts.jpg" alt="google alerts Twitter Search, Google Trends, and Google Alerts for Marketing Research" width="359" height="264" /></a>I have a Google alert set up for the terms &#8220;chom chom advertising.&#8221; Whenever a website mentions those words, Google Alerts will provide me the url of the source.</span></p>
<p><span><a title="Google Trends" href="http://www.google.com/trends" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Trends</a>, </span><a title="Twitter Search" href="http://search.twitter.com/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/search.twitter.com');" target="_blank">Twitter Search</a>, and <a title="Google Alerts" href="http://www.google.com/alerts" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google Alerts</a> are simply great as a starting point for your marketing research. Should you base all your decisions based on the information provided? May be, may be not. It really depends on the complexity of the information you are looking for.</p>
<p>Are you using any of the tools? For what searches?</p>

<p>No doubt having a child is the most wonderful thing parents can experience. I have been blessed with an adorable and precious daughter named Ellie. It&#8217;s truly a miracle to see her grow from inside the womb to almost a 11-month girl now. If I am writing this post and you&#8217;re reading it, we were also at one point of time a baby. And somehow we were incredibly successful babies. We started with almost nothing in the brain, limited mobility, unable to speak, and sleeping 20 hrs a day. Yet, we did it! We did it! Sadly on our way to adulthood, we forgot what made us successful and loved as when we were babies. We have to put on our &#8220;seriousness&#8221; mask, we have to &#8220;behave&#8221; in society&#8230; work, work, work, and no more time to play. And last but but least: STRESS. Where the heck did that come from? No wonder many of us feel success is out of reach.</p>
<p>I observe Ellie day after day and I know she is a happy baby. Here are a few things I learned from her:</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Everything and anything is a playground</strong>. If you can infuse fun and play in whatever you do, you are already happy.</li>
<li><strong>Fail, fail, fail, until you succeed</strong>. You probably forgot all the bruises and bumps before you could walk.</li>
<li><strong>Don&#8217;t take &#8220;NO&#8221; for an answer</strong>. Actually, &#8220;NO&#8221; is the start of the conversation. No matter how many times I say &#8220;NO&#8221;, she keeps doing it. Very challenging!</li>
<li><strong>Move on</strong>. Resentment, vengeance&#8230; those are adult stuffs; not baby stuffs.</li>
<li><strong>Ring the alarm</strong>. If you feel the situation is out of control, call for help. If you don&#8217;t, a baby would be smarter than you are!</li>
<li><strong>Learn, learn, and learn</strong>. &#8220;Knowledge is power&#8221; Samuel Johnson.</li>
<li><strong>Be fearless&#8230; it won&#8217;t kill</strong>. Why are those children always laughing, crying, and running during the mass?</li>
<li><strong>Do no evil</strong>. Yes, <a title="6. You can make money without doing evil." href="http://www.google.com/corporate/tenthings.html" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.google.com');" target="_blank">Google </a>is a big baby.</li>
</ol>
<p>My wife always wishes our Ellie stays a baby forever. She might be right after all. What are you still waiting for? Go and find the baby in you!</p>
